Haiti, Port au Prince. August 2001. Tive (6) is a one of Haiti’s 300.000 ‘Restavec’, a Creole term that means “staying with”. Poor parents send their children as ‘Restavec’ (70% are girls) to wealthier families to work as servants in the hope these children will have food, education and a better life. In reality the ‘Restavec’ do not have any rights at all, are mentally and physically mistreated, often beaten, girls sexually abused and do not attend school.
