Part of a double page I came across on 13 August in a Dutch newspaper, NRC Next, notorious for its use of photography. Out of the abundant macho performances of Putin they made an ‘Old Maid’, the Americans call it, the British call it ‘Happy families’, the Dutch ‘Kwartetspel’. Just glue the pages on carton and cut the cards out.

Putin flying a plane, extinguishing forest fires. Putin on his own, hunting deer (forget the photographer, forget the chopper in the background), Putin petting animals.

“From ‘Vehicles’ be so kind to hand me Putin driving a motorcycle.”

“Sorry, I have to disappoint you. Now my turn. From ‘Cars’ do you happen to have Putin driving a classic Volga?”

The man surely knows how to use a photograph. No other present politician goes as far as he does in photographically showing as long as he is in charge everything will be fine.

Sarkozy did some horse riding too in front of the photo camera, canoeing even. But from the movies the French knew already how Superman came to an end, in a wheelchair. Besides, they are more interested in romance. More than the Russians at least Putin seems to think.

Imagine Putin and his wife kissing passionately, Putin’s wife brushing a smut from his jacket. That would add a new chapter to his Old Maid/Happy Families/Kwartet. It would make him almost irreplaceable.
