It all began with Weina’s beautiful column on PhotoQ. Webmaster Edie Peters and I started to dream about an English subsite of PhotoQ. More international in spirit and in approach. Based upon what we Dutch are good at: seeing things for what they are. Nescio, Saenredam, Olie, de Putter, Dijkstra.
Writing in English also forces you to skip the local issues. To see things in a more global perspective, hopefully without making them bigger than they are. I am a bit worried: how is my English? As Weina’s text, also my text is not officialy translated, we just write as it comes. This is a test.
On Ash Wednesday New Orleans is having a party, it is called Mardi Gras. What happens in Amsterdam on Queens day is nothing compared to what happens in New Orleans at Mardi Gras. People go to church to get an ash cross and then it all starts. Alec Soth went to take pictures. During the festivities he stayed in his hotel, he says he couldn’t handle the communal feeling. In his room he follows the festivities on TV and takes pictures from his bed. When all is over, he finds the courage to go outside and photographs flatout people and flatout debris. Good photography, not stunning. Then he calls a friend he photographed ten years ago at Mardi Gras. He meets her again… and it takes off. Just see for yourself.
