Galerie Juliètte Jongma presenteert 'Collisions' van Melissa Gordon & Jessica Wiesner.
Het engelstalige persbericht:
Melissa Gordon and Jessica Wiesner’s Collisions, now at Galerie Juliètte Jongma, partners performance with reality, abstraction with recognition. Sandbags rigged to pulleys on the ceiling act as counterweights to suspended silkscreen panels and
transparencies. These visible fly systems with hanging drops recall a stage set, but the slightly obscured scenes in the background are anything but theatrical. Collagedimages highlight newspaper texts and photographs of events in American history, such as the Kent State, and less publicized Jackson State shootings. While the stage is the overall motif or aesthetic framework for Collisions, the mediation of history and individual experience are its themes. And if all the world is a stage, then the media is both the playbill and the three-ring circus which offers the world up for our consumption.
The position of the viewer is central to seeing the artworks. Depending on where you stand, the recognizable dissolves into the abstract or, conversely, the nonrepresentational suddenly gives way to figuration. In one work, the artists suspend unidentifiable shapes of bold color on a transparent sheet. If you align yourself with the artwork, the shapes fall into place like puzzle pieces as they hover in front of an archival photo of the New York Times pressroom.
Throughout the exhibition the artists play with the information we are given, but they expose their methods and materials the whole way. Part of the work in the gallery’s entryway is perfectly obscured by a small black panel cantilevered from the wall a few feet before it. It looks like the image’s content has been redacted by this floating mark of censorship, but there are no secrets in Gordon and Wiesner’s editing. They let us peek around the corner and peer into the rafters to see how the illusions work, reminding us to look for the bigger picture, to seek out what we’ve been missing.
